Dutchman Jol to take charge at Hamburg Posted on May 14th
(CNN) — Former Tottenham manager Martin Jol has been appointed as the new head coach at Bundesliga side SV Hamburg.
Jol was widely tipped to take charge of Bundesliga side Hamburg.
Jol, 52, replaces Huub Stevens, who quit last November to return to his former club PSV Eindhoven.
The Dutchman has signed a two-year deal and will be assisted by Zeljko Petrovic, the former coach of Dutch second division side RKC Waalwijk.
Hamburg are currently fifth in the German standings and chasing a Champions League or UEFA Cup place, but they have been without a permanent coach since Stevens departed. Jol is expected to take up his duties in July.
Jol, who joined Tottenham in 2004, guided them to successive fifth places in the Premier League, but was sacked last October after a poor start to the season to be succeeded by Juande Ramos.
His appointment at Hamburg has been widely predicted and the club’s chairman Bernd Hoffmann was delighted to have finally bagged his man.
He told the club’s official Web site: “We are certain that in Martin Jol we have appointed the right coach.”
Jol is expected to be officially unveiled at the start of next week after the end of the current Bundesliga season.
