Moyer seems to become more perfect Posted on August 5th

Leading the National League East by 21/2 games, the Phillies return to Citizens Bank Park tonight to begin a three-game series against the second-place Florida Marlins.

The Marlins have won five of nine meetings against the Phils this season, but the Phils have the man they want on the mound tonight.

Starting pitcher Jamie Moyer is 10-0 with a 3.03 ERA in 10 career starts against the Marlins. Three of those wins have come this season, including July 18 when the Phils set up their post-all-star-break rotation so that Moyer would face Florida in the first game back.

Moyer, the majors’ oldest player at 45, is 10-6 with a 3.79 ERA in 22 starts. He is 8-3 with a 3.20 ERA in his last 14 starts. He will oppose righthander Josh Johnson, who has made four starts (all Marlins’ wins) since recovering from Tommy John surgery. One of those starts came July 20 against the Phils. Johnson held the Phils to two runs over 62/3 innings.

This is an important week for the Marlins, who play the Mets three times in New York beginning Friday. The Mets are in third place in the NL East, three games behind the Phillies and a half-game behind the Marlins.

After their showdown against the Marlins, the Phils host Pittsburgh in a three-game series beginning Friday. The Phils then play seven games on the West Coast against the Dodgers and Padres, before returning home for nine games. In all, 15 of the Phils’ next 22 games are at home. The Phillies are 29-24 at Citizens Bank Park and have had 34 sellouts, including eight straight.
