Is Andy Woody? Posted on November 11th

It is time for Jeffrey Lurie to revisit - if he’s ever considered the question at all since Andy Reid was hired 10 years ago - the question of Reid’s future with the team.

We do not wish to come across as the screeching portion of the fan base that has been calling for Reid’s head for years. That vocal, obnoxious section of the fan base has been mistaken as the majority voice of Eagles fans for too long and we will not perpetuate their vitriol here. We will, however, rationally question whether or not Reid’s best days with the Philadelphia Eagles are now past.

Why is it that Reid reverts to Woody Hayes when presented with a short-yardage situation? He’s pass-happy the other 90 percent of the time, so why change? Perhaps it is an attempt to convince everyone that he was right, that the personnel decisions he made really weren’t wrong.

Change that rule

Clock and challenge management were an issue [Sunday] night again, too. While everything Tom Coughlin did turned to gold, everything Reid did turned to dust.

And speaking of challenges, the ruling that a fraction of Eli Manning’s heel hadn’t yet passed over the line of scrimmage is stone cold ridiculous. Has that call ever been overturned? EVER? If anyone knows, please enlighten us. . . . And if that is the letter of the law, then the rule needs to be changed. Why wouldn’t it be where the ball is released? The ball has to break the plane of the goal line for there to be a touchdown. What about when the ball breaks the plane of the line of scrimmage as determined by those nifty superimposed computer graphics?

Radio rules

The next time that Reid is unsure of when to use the red challenge flag he can simply power on the Walkman and the answer is there. AM broadcast not coming in too clear, no problem. The game is also on FM. It couldn’t be easier for the big guy.

It’s obvious the big fancy head-set isn’t working. It’s obvious that whoever is telling Reid when to challenge a play is clueless. But thankfully there are Merrill Reese and Mike Quick. When I am at the game and there is a questionable call I just look over to my dad (who is listening to the broadcast) and ask what Merrill is saying. And no surprise, Merrill is usually spot on.

Sports Wit’out

The Drudge Report and a number of political blogs have picked up on the story of Joe Biden getting booed by Philly fans, but there’s just one problem: The fans were booing the officials, not Biden. . . . Giants quarterback Eli Manning had spiked the ball to avoid a sack. Manning should have been called for intentional grounding, but for some reason the referee didn’t throw the flag. So the fans started booing the ref.
